Are you a new job seeker?

If you do not have a job or a student place, you will have to register as an unemployed job seeker online on the TE Services’ E-services. 

Sign in to Job Market Finland and you can draft a job seeker profile on the Job Market Finland website for the employers to find and contact you. You can also browse vacancies and look for services that would support your search and work ability on the website.

Job seeking and studying

As a job seeker you have a number of options to choose from in order to enhance your job seeking skills or professional competence. Local educational institutions in the area have short-term training available and employers also seek employers to be trained and hired directly by recruitment training. Job seekers can opt also for career counselling and various trainings.

Employment services and personal career coaches for non-Finnish speaking clients are at Tietotalo in Kilpisenkatu 1D. You can meet your personal career coach only by appointment. Leave a message with your contact details for your personal career coach on the TE services’ online E-services. 

Or you can come in to meet the on-duty personal career coach without prior booking on weekdays between 12.00 and 15.00.

Martti Ahtisaari Lectures

The Martti Ahtisaari Lecture will be held in Jyväskylä on 13.2.2024.

The lecture is open to the public and will take place in the main building of the University of Jyväskylä on 13.2.2024 at 15:00.

The keynote speech will be given by the President of Estonia, Alar Karis. The 16th Martti Ahtisaari Lecture is a discussion event in memory of Martti Ahtisaari and in honour of his legacy of peace work.

Jyväskylä City Hall

The City Hall has offices for about thirty people. The facilities on the ground floor include the Mayor’s office, the City Board meeting room, the Registry Office, the City Office, Legal Services and the information desk.

The City Council has its meetings in the Great Hall on the first floor, with the adjacent halls being reserved for receptions and other special events. The other end of the building houses offices for communications and international relations staff.

Jyväskylä City Strategy

The Jyväskylä City Council approved the updated Jyväskylä City Strategy for the years 2022–2025 in February 2022. The vision is "Jyväskylä is a growing and international city of education and culture. The mission is "We promote the well-being, participation and social relations of our citizens". Values are humanity, courage, openness, responsibility and safety.

Mental health and substance abuse

Do you have challenges with mental health or how everyday life is going? Mental health and substance abuse services provide free care and support for adults (over 18). Contact the health centre in your area.  

If you need support or information about accessing the service or guidance, you can contact the service number +358 14 266 9035, where a psychiatric nurse will provide guidance on weekdays (Mon-Fri) 8-15.30, Fridays 8-14.30.

Social services

The services of social work provided are rehabilitative social work and social security, child protection and the social work with disabled. There are two main offices of Social Services in the city centre of which the other looks after the rehabilitative social work and social security, and the other looks after child protection and agreements of child custody and visiting rights. The social work with disabled has been centralised in the Office of Social work with the disabled.

Safety and security

Jyväskylä is a safe and a pleasant city to live in and to visit for everybody. Major accidents or other serious security threats are rare here as they are everywhere in Finland, one of the safest countries in the world. Public order, public security, and rescue services are guaranteed and maintained by Finnish national authorities. Help and support of good quality and of easy access are widely provided in case of different kinds of incidents.

Education for foreigners in basic education

Basic education (comprehensive school) is free of charge all-round education. Every child residing permanently in Finland is obliged to attend comprehensive school. Comprehensive school takes nine years and is intended for children/teenagers from 7 to 16 years of age. This also applies to immigrant children/teenagers residing permanently in Finland.

Organize an event

Jyväskylä is a popular event city where 5000 different events are organized annually. Festivals, sports events, congresses and meetings are a familiar sight in the city. The compact size of the city and versatile venues make it possible to organize events of all sizes.

The education services of the City of Jyväskylä

The education services of the City of Jyväskylä are responsible for basic education. Basic education (comprehensive school) is free of charge all-round education. Every child residing permanently in Finland is obliged to attend comprehensive school. Comprehensive school takes nine years and is intended for children/teenagers from 7 to 16 years of age. This also applies to immigrant children/teenagers residing permanently in Finland. In comprehensive school, the teaching groups are established by class year.

Music

The Music Department is located on the third floor of the Main Library, tel. (014) 266 4115.

Our music collection consists of CDs, LPs, sheet music, study scores, instrument guides, music books, DVDs, and magazines.

The collection is accessible through the online library catalogue. If your database searches produce no results, it is a good idea to ask a librarian in the Music Department.

Healthcare services

In Finland everybody is entitled to basic health care. Municipalities provide services for all agegroups, from children's daycare to the treatment and care of the elderly. In Jyväskylä these services are administered by the Centre for Social and Health Services. Their services cover among other things health care and doctors as well as pre- and post-natal care.

Colleges and adult education

Jyväskylä is one of the liveliest school and college towns in Finland. Almost every third person in the street is a pupil or student with a student population of 45,000 in total. The most educated people in their thirties in the country live here. The traditions of education and Finnishness run strong: the first Finnish secondary school in Finland was founded here as were the very first Finnish seminary for primary school teachers and the first Finnish girls’ school.
