15th International Print Triennial

The fifteenth international Graphica Creativa triennale fills the Jyväskylä Art Museum with works by young artists. 

Graphica Creativa 2019 – Hereafter features works by artists from invited art universities in four major cities: Helsinki, Oslo, Tokyo and Alberta. The focus is on printmaking students who present projects on themes important to them, accompanied by works by professors and teachers of printmaking.

15.6.–8.9.2019 Art Museum Gallery

Three years have passed since I came to Finland. The light, and the interweave of waters and forests captivated me and continue to fascinate me. In Japan I thought a lot about the power of nature and I tried to express its limitless strength in abstract images. I was looking for new ways of expression using metal, textiles and oxidants along side traditional Japanese painting mediums. But my experience of Finnish nature gave me new inspiration and completely changed me.

Emma Ainala offers a view into a world in which young women play the main role.  The women perform as if on stage with an array of draped fabrics and an abundance of  goods, or surrounded by water and luscious nature. Their regard is focused on the viewer or just beyond, the faces might have more than two eyes, looking through a mask. Their bodies are twisted into many positions – one woman stands on her head, another stretches like an acrobat and a third sits in lotus position. Who are these woman, and in which mythology do they live?

Welcome to the Orava Family’s home from the 1960’s!

Visitors can roam around freely touching furniture and objects as they wish. You can also play the piano, draw, listen to the radio or flip through the family album.
How did cloths from the 60’s look and fell? All of the clothes, shoes and accessories left in the vestibule can be touched and tried on.
Just remember to respect the Orava family’s home, possessions and artwork.

1.2.–12.5.

Jyväskylä Art museum´s main exhibition in spring 2019 features painter Nanna Susi (b. 1967). Well known for her large and colourful paintings filled with emotional content, Susi is one of the most successful contemporary artists in Finland.

The retrospective exhibition Nanna Susi In the Moods includes paintings from the beginning of the artist´s career in the 1990s to the current day. The exhibition has been produced in cooperation between Salo Art Museum and Jyväskylä Art Museum.

Jyväskylä Art Museum exhibits the work of six photographers -- Vincent Debanne (France), Luigi Gariglio (Italy), Ulrich Gebert (Germany), Tuomo Manninen (Finland), Xavier Ribas (Spain) and Tomoko Yoneda (UK) -- produced in 2006 as commissions for the Changing Faces/ WORK project.

Airport is a community art project, which was planned and organized by the Siipeilijät (The Free-riders) volunteers, the Art Museum staff and Artists from Central Finland who are all involved in Magic of Flight exhibition.

This piece is part of the Jyväskylä Museums’ collective of events and exhibitions in Magic of Flight. 

8.12.2007 - 10.2.2008 Holvi

Carborundum is a printmaking technique that landed in Finland in the late 1980's, where the printmaking plate is painted with a mixture of glue and carborundum sand. My first works with this technique were prints made from thickly painted plates with undiluted paint. With time, the prints have become more delicate. Controlled coincidences frequent in my current work. I might think of a certain colour; the sodden chill conferred by an autumn storm, a beach gilded orange by the sun, a longing that paints the sky black...

28.11.2007 - 6.1.2008 Holvi

This autumn arrives with the 120th anniversary of Urho Lehtinen's (1887-1982) birth. We commemorate the artist by directing our gaze at his homestead and the images of his loved ones. His beloved atelier home, Pälvelä, and the beautiful houses and idyllic gardens of the Jyväskylä of his time were documented in his work. The blaze of the blooming garden of Pälvelä brought rich and vibrant colours into his work.
The artist's spouse, Anneli Lehtinen, and his granddaughter Outi Markkanen have participated in the making of the exhibition.

Spanish painter Bartolomé Roca’s paintings are like colourful Spanish fans, which gradually open up to the eyes of the viewer, one sensation at a time – strong colours, abundant themes, movement and shifting forms. With careful observation, many newfound nuances and details rise to the surface and the complexity of the work is enhanced. At the same time, each and every painting breathes harmony into its own shapes and depths, and unites the exhibition as a whole.

Thoughts about flying have a strong aesthetic dimension. Bird’s ability to spread their wings and rise into the sky and people’s desire to follow are both abundantly described in romantic terms.

"In our work we are interested in the combination of natural and artificial light along with shadows and darkness. In our sculptures, installations, and public artwork we study light in space: what does light represent, how do materials reflect light and how can we combine the functional and artistic in lighting?

Juicy Pig’s Restaurant presents a brave new world of queasy optimism. The show combines paintings, decorative plates, projections and looped animations that celebrate a fictional restaurant chain.

Herman and Elisabeth Hallonblad – Art Patrons from Ladoga Karelia

The state councilman Herman Hallonblad (1825–1894) and his wife Elisabeth Hallonblad (1831–1907) from Sortavala were the most significant supporters of the Finnish and Karelian culture, in their time. Ladoga Karelia was formerly an area of Finland which was ceded to the Soviet Union after the Second World War.

The Jyväskylä Art Museum’s summer exhibition brings attention to the works of our national artists Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865–1931) and Pekka Halonen (1865–1933) made in Central Finland, and shows the artists as an integral part of their era, in which the concept of the “Finnish landscape” was born.

Live Herring ’11 will take place in spring 2011 in Central Finland. This project is a series of exhibitions and events focused on (new)media art, organized by the Live Herring group.

“I am a socialist-anarchist-individual-collectivist-individualist-communist-aristocratic-democratic” was the answer the influential American research journalist Henry Demarest Lloyd (1847–1903), gave when asked of his political views. Lloyd was uninterested in categorizing himself and instead brought forward the complex relationship between the private and the communal. Lloyd’s answer is the starting point for the exhibition curated by Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen.

MUM's is a Finnish trademark found by Finnish artist Outi Puro in 2006. MUM's is specialized in socially and environmentally sustainable design. MUM's is collaborating with South African designers and their workshops.

In the exhibition there are on dispaly artworks and products which all are made of recycled materials in South Africa. The textile sculptures are weaven by female artisans in Mielie workshop in Capetown, see more information www.mielie.com

Nov 5. – Jan 16. Holvi

The retrospective exhibition celebrates Päivi Meriläinen's (born 1959 in Piippola) career of the past 30 years. She has graduated as a painter from the Art School of Lahti in 1980. She has lived and worked in Jyväskylä since 1981.

In time she has been working with plenty of different kind of techniques and materials. She has painted abstract as well as figurative and monumental works. Furthermore she has sculptured reliefs and other works of wood and fibreclass. In recent years Meriläinen has focused more on large figurative oil paintings.
