Record birdsong with a popular app and help science – one hundred point count stations around the city in Jyväskylä

Kvik kvik, tsirp tsirp and ti-ti-tyy – now you no longer have to guess which bird species it is, as the artificial intelligence of the mobile application recognizes bird species! By making a recording, you can also help science. During the spring, a hundred point counting sites for migratory birds have been set up in the City of Jyväskylä area, where anyone can record birdsong and make their recordings available to researchers. This is the Migratory Bird Spring application developed by the University of Jyväskylä, and this year it will be used to create a point count network together with the City of Helsinki and Metsähallitus National Parks.

In Jyväskylä, point count sites can be found near residential areas

The new name of Yaroslavl Square will be Viitaniemi Square

The name of Yaroslavl Square (Jaroslavlin aukio) in Viitaniemi, Jyväskylä, will change to Viitaniemi Square (Viitaniemenaukio). The reason for the name change is that the city of Jyväskylä suspended cooperation with its twin city Yaroslavl in the spring of 2022.

Viitaniemi Square is a suitable new name for the square because it is centrally located in Viitaniemi.

Carbon Neutral Jyväskylä 2030

The changing climate touches everyone of us and actors need to act on slowing it down, also in Jyväskylä. The City of Jyväskylä is set on achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. A carbon neutral city does not emit more carbon to the atmosphere than it can absorb from the atmosphere in its carbon sinks, for instance forests.

Power cut

There is an exceptional winter in front of us, and we might probably suffer from the lack of electricity including even power cuts for which we will have to try to be prepared.

Hiking

Jyväskylä has a number of marked nature trails with information boards in a variety of terrains and suitable for hikers of different skill levels. In addition, the city has bird towers situated by a number of different bodies of water. From them one can spot even some rarer birds, particularly during the springtime.

The large areas of unbroken forest and varying terrain offer excellent possibilities for hiking and nature experiences. There are also some fine nature spots right by the centre which are worth a visit.

Air pollution control

Traffic in the city and along trunk roads as well as emissions from industrial plants worsen the quality of the air. The city’s environmental protection authorities make decisions and give verdicts to combat these disadvantages.

The sanding of the roads is the most significant individual culprit for worsened air quality in the city. Due to the dust emitted from it, the air quality may at times even be very poor during the spring.
