The current third graders can choose the voluntary A2 language starting in the fourth grade by 25.1.2026. The guardians have received a Wilma message with more detailed instructions on language selection. There will also be two parents' evenings with the same content on choosing the A2 language on 14.1. and 21.1.2026.

All children born in 2020 will participate in pre-primary education starting in August 2026. Applications for a pre-primary education place are submitted between 16 January and 1 February 2026 through the online services of early childhood education. Decisions regarding placements in pre-primary education will be made during the spring.

The skating season, which started on the city's artificial ice rinks, is now in full swing, and the natural ice rinks are gradually opening up to skaters.

The results of the 2025 national Move! measurements have been completed. The results of 5th and 8th graders in Jyväskylä have improved in almost all areas. In the overall results, Jyväskylä ranks clearly above the national average in both grades. The results also improved in the comparison of the country's 10 largest cities: Jyväskylä rose from last year's fourth place to number one in the comparison.

The City of Jyväskylä organises a wide range of leisure activities for children, young people and families with children in different parts of the city.

 The third graders in Jyväskylä schools can apply for music classroom teaching 12.-25.1.2026. The guardians have received a Wilma-message and instructions on how to apply for a music class, the music test and the criteria for admission to a music class.

New Year's Eve will be celebrated at Jyväskylä's Veturitallit with a varied programme of activities. An outdoor event will be held for families with children at Mäki-Matti family park. Both events are free of charge. The city decided to discontinue fireworks displays a year ago.

During its meeting on December 2, the Jyväskylä Youth Council decided to explore the possibilities of group exchanges with Erasmus+ funding, approved the guidelines and rules for applying for project funding for 2026, and selected the Youth Council Member of the Month.

The Christmas holiday season brings changes to the opening hours and activities of Jyväskylä's youth services. Outreach youth work will be available on weekdays during the Christmas season, and youth centers will be open until December 17. There will be exceptions to the opening hours of the Nuorten talo walk-in service and Ohjaamo Jyväskylä during the Christmas season.

The two-year Väkivallaton nuoruus - nuorten katuväkivallan ehkäisyhanke ("Non-violent youth - youth street violence prevention project") will be implemented in Jyväskylä between September 1, 2025, and August 31, 2027. The project will develop a youth work team in Jyväskylä that will increase youth work on the streets and in residential areas.

Students from the Huhtasuo comprehensive school in Jyväskylä have brightened up the streetscape in their area by painting two Alva Sähköverkko electrical substations and one electrical box. The young people designed the artwork themselves, and the result is that the sides of the substations are now covered in colorful and beautiful patterns.
