Rental of allotment garden

The city of Jyväskylä has 428 allotment plots in seven different areas. Plots are usually 100 m2 in size. The plots are of different sizes, and their prices depend on the size and services.

Novice allotment gardener – rent your own city allotment now, in the spring

The allotment garden plots have been opened to rent for new gardeners. Rental begins on 11 April at 10 a.m.

You can rent an allotment plot online (requires bank credentials and e-mail) or by visiting the Jyväskylä Information Service Desk (Asemakatu 7). Online renting service is only in Finnish. Please, follow the guideline how to fill out the renting form.

By paying the plot rent, you commit to comply with the terms and conditions of renting the plots. Please familiarize yourself with the rules for agricultural plot areas in advance. The rental policies can also be found at the service desk. Please note the number of the section when making a reservation.

Those who rented an allotment plot last year have already ensured the continuation of the rental contract.

Planting perennials is possible

Perennials can be planted in Keljonlahti, Kilkitniemi, Kirri, Kortesuo-Viitaniemi, Naattia, and Sulkuranta garden allotments.

In the Survo-Korpela, the city maintains soil cultivation of the allotment garden area in the autumn and spring. Therefore planting perennials is not possible in this area and the plots have to be cleared of all items by 10 October. 

Note! The cultivation of perennial plants will be possible in half of the Survo-Korpela allotment garden plots from spring 2025.

Renew old allotment gardens' rent

You have to renew your tenancy on your own initiative every year. The plot rented last summer can be secured by paying the rent between 1 and 31 March 2023, either in the electronic reservation service (if you have an online bank account and email address) or at Jyväskylä Information Service Desk (Asemakatu 7, forum shopping center). At the checkout, the tenant of the allotment plot must state their name and social security number or the Y-ID of the company. The booking service sends a reminder by email every year when it's time to pay for the reservation. In addition, a text message will remind you of the matter.

Allotment Gardening Rules

Waste disposal

The plot holder is to keep the plot and its surroundings tidy and comfortable. The city will place wheelie bins for mixed waste to Sulkuranta, Kortesuo-Viitaniemi, Survo-Korpela, Kirri and Keljonlahti allotment gardens.

Decomposing waste generated on the plot may be composted on the site. Leaf mulch and compost can be stored on the plot over the winter. However, Survo-Korpela allotments are an exception.

Storing non-gardening materials on the plot is prohibited (such as car tyres, barbeques etc.). Light-weight garden furniture, such as chairs, are acceptable. The allotments are not areas for storing or using non-gardening materials. The city is entitled to remove illicit material and charge the tenant in full for the cleaning costs. The minimum charge is 100 euros.

Piling plant waste and rubbish on the edges of the allotment garden is forbidden.

Open fires are prohibited on the plot. Burning rubbish or other debris is prohibited.

Boundaries

Boundary markers on the area must not be moved. If the city has to intervene in settling ambiguous allotment boundary issues, the parties in question will be charged the expenses of the procedure in full. The minimum charge is 100 euros.

The tenants attend to the lanes between the plots together. The lanes are 50 cm in width

Other information

The City is not responsible for the damage caused to the plants or structures on the plot.

Hoses must not be attached to the irrigation water tanks. Water must be transported to the plot with watering cans or other containers.

Gardening in Survo-Korpela allotment garden 

The plot must be used only for growing produce. The plot has to be cultivated and well-tended. 

The city is responsible for the soil cultivation of the allotment garden.

The layout of the plants has to allow the plot holder to tend to and harvest the produce on their own plot without trespassing other plots or inconveniencing other tenants. All parts of the plants on a plot have to be within the boundaries of the said plot. Sowing or planting invasive alien species is forbidden. More information about invasive alien species. 

The lanes between plots have to kept unobstructed to allow free access to other plots. The lanes must not be used for growing produce. 

Structures promoting gardening may be erected on the plot for the growing season. However, they must not inconvenience activities on neighbouring plots. All structures have to be removed from the Survo-Korpela allotment garden in the end of the growing season by the end of September. The city is entitled to charge the tenant in full for removal and cleaning costs, if the plot holder has not removed their property from the plot. The minimum charge is 100 euros.

Use of organic plant protecting agents and pesticides is allowed.

Cultivation of Keljonlahti, Kilkitniemi, Kirri, Kortesuo-Viitaniemi, Naattia and Sulkuranta allotment plots

The plot must be used only for growing produce. The plot has to be cultivated and well-tended. If, for no legitimate reason, the cultivation of a plot has not been started by the end of June or the plot is covered in weeds, hay or materials, the tenant will lose the leasehold of the allotment plot and the city is entitled to rent it to a new tenant.

The plot holder is responsible for the soil cultivation on the allotment.

The layout of the plants has to allow the plot holder to tend to and harvest the produce on their own plot without trespassing other plots or inconveniencing other tenants. All parts of the plants on a plot have to be within the boundaries of the said plot. Perennials, which will grow tall, e.g. berry shrubs and rhubarb, have to be planted at least 1.5 m from the plot boundaries. 

Small fruit trees can be planted on the plot.  The trees must not interfere cultivation on neighbouring plots with their root-growth or shadow.

Sowing or planting invasive alien species is forbidden. More information about invasive alien species. 

The lanes between plots have to kept unobstructed to allow free access to other plots. The lanes must not be used for growing produce. The city removes cultivated plants from the lanes.

Wooden planting boxes, compost frames and tool boxes are allowed and they can be stored on the plot over the winter. They must be placed at least 100 cm from the neighbouring plot. Installing structures requiring foundations such as greenhouses, awnings, wooden fences, decks and platforms, and paving is prohibited on the plot. Plantings can be bordered with a narrow stone edging or lawn edging strip. Lightweight greenhouses not requiring foundations can be installed on the plot. The structures must be placed at least 100 cm from the plot boundaries. Light fencing or netting structures to deter unwanted wildlife and pests are allowed on the plot. However, they must not inconvenience activities on neighbouring plots. The city is entitled to remove illicit structures from the allotment plots and charge the tenant for the cleaning costs in full. The minimum charge is 100 euros.
