Environmental protection authorities are responsible for the prevention of noise disturbance within the city area, for instance in conjunction with environmental permits and by participating in the planning of land use.

Noise complaint

One can file a noise complaint to the environmental protection authorities regarding an event or activity which causes disturbing noise or tremors. An event organiser must also notify beforehand any inhabitants, care institutions, schools and other possible establishments within the relevant area concerning any disturbing noise or tremors.

Cities of over 100 000 inhabitants conduct a noise assessment and draft an action plan for noise prevention every five years. The City of Jyväskylä has in cooperation with the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency conducted assessments in 2021 and 2022 on the noise situation in the urban areas of Jyväskylä and the busiest highways.

The levels of environmental noise from railroads and industrial activity has also been computationally assessed throughout the city.
