30.10.2025Construction of new sports and exercise facilities at Jyväskylä’s Hippos area will start in December. All parties involved in the project confirmed their participation with agreements signed at the kick-off meeting held today, October 28, 2025. The investment of over €210 million in the Hippos center for sports, elite sports, research, and education is unique in Finland. Construction will take just over two years, and the total employment impact during the construction period is estimated at approximately 2,600 person-years. The construction site will be fenced off in November, and construction in the area will begin in December.Image

3.8.2025Secto Rally Finland 2025 ended today with victory for Jyväskylä natives Kalle Rovanperä and Jonne Halttunen. The official award ceremony will be held at 2:15 p.m. in Kakaristo, Ouninpohja, but in the afternoon at 4:00 p.m., a victory celebration for the whole family will be held at the Paviljonki circular square in Jyväskylä. 17.4.2023The federal council of the Finnish Athletics Federation (SUL) has granted the 2026 Athletics Championship, the Kaleva Games (Kalevan Kisat), to Jyväskylä. The City of Jyväskylä and the Jyväskylä Field Athletes (JKU) jointly applied for competitions for 2026, which is the 100th anniversary of Harju Stadium. Harju Stadium will be renovated and expanded by the time of the Kaleva Games.Image

17.11.2022The Finnish round of the World Rally Championship, or Secto Rally Finland, returned this year to its full four-day glory after the difficult coronavirus period. A total of 230,000 spectators were recorded in Jyväskylä and Central Finland, the visitor record was broken in Harju, and the Finnish World Cup Rally left a jackpot of income behind for the Jyväskylä region and Central Finland.Image
Jyväskylä is a sporting paradise for all interested in physical well-being. The city encourages everyone from babies to the elderly to adopt an active lifestyle. There are a great number of disciplines to choose from whether your interest lies in serious competition or just gentle exercise.
The City of Jyväskylä has approximately 360 sports venues that range from multipurpose halls to nature trails. Top athletes can prepare for competition in about 70 different sports thanks to well-equipped training facilities and high-quality coaching. In addition to the numerous sports facilities, there are lakes and forests within walking distance to enjoy the great outdoors.
The city is responsible for providing suitable conditions for sports and recreation, and it also arranges certain physical activities. The City Sports Services organises for example swimming lessons and adapted physical activities for people with special needs and the elderly. Moreover, approximately 220 local sports clubs and other communities as well as the private wellness sector provide the city’s inhabitants and visitors with diverse opportunities for being physically active.
Jyväskylä enjoys an inspiring sporting culture. The atmosphere is constantly spiced with sporting occasions ranging from local events to the Neste Oil Rally Finland every August. The scientific research and education institutions like the university’s Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, contribute greatly to Jyväskylä’s reputation as a forerunner of sports and recreation in Finland.
