What is a work trial?

A work trial is an opportunity to get accustomed to working life and the employer. No employment contract is drawn up for a work trial. A work trial is always of limited duration. You can stay in work trial for a maximum of one year, but with the same employer for a maximum of six months. The most common work trials are 1-3 months long. The daily duration of the work trial and the number of working days per week will be agreed upon with the wok trial participant. A work trial can be organised no more than five days a week and 4-8 hours a day.

A work trial is well suited for those who....

  • Are professionally qualified and do not yet have any work experience
  • Are thinking about changing careers and want to try out other careers
  • Have been absent from work life for a long time and want to get accustomed to work life
  • Have worked in another country and want to get accustomed to Finnish working life

Income during a work trial?

If you received unemployment benefit before the start of the work trial, you will also be paid the same benefit during the work trial.

You can get an increase in unemployment benefit if the work trial is part of your employment plan.
The unemployment insurance fund or Kela will make a decision on paying the increase.

You can be reimbursed for the days you participated in the work trial.

Before you start your work trial

You can go and ask for a work trial position from an employer who interests you.
The work trial partner and the employer will draft a work trial contract.
The contract must be sent to the personal coach about two weeks before the start of the work trial. The personal coach will approve and sign the agreement.
The work trial may not be started until the agreement has been approved.
