The network redevelopment of early childhood education and basic education
The City of Jyväskylä is exploring school network redevelopment to ensure sufficient opportunities for teaching practice for the University of Jyväskylä’s teacher education
The growing number of students at the University of Jyväskylä’s Department of Teacher Education has increased the need for teaching practice opportunities in the actual school environment. Students complete their teaching practice at the University of Jyväskylä Teacher Training School (Normaalikoulu).
Last year, the University of Jyväskylä approached the city with a request to increase the number of pupils in basic education at the Teacher Training School to secure sufficient opportunities for practice. The city and the university have begun preparations to expand the Teacher Training School to four parallel classes in grades 1–6 and to six parallel classes in grades 7–9.
The city’s preliminary assessment examines what expanding the number of pupils in basic education at the Teacher Training School would require and how this could be carried out in practice. The preparations also take into account previously identified needs for reassessment of the city’s school network, especially with regard to the Keltinmäki, Kortepohja, Kypärämäki, Kilpinen, and Viitaniemi schools. As the planning has progressed, Puistokatu school has also been included in the assessment. The assessment of possible effects on the Puistokatu school has only just begun. If implemented, the changes may affect the neighbourhood school principle for children in the area.
The study is scheduled to be completed in spring 2026. The possible implementation would proceed systematically in phases one grade at a time starting in 2027 at the earliest.
