Carbon Neutral Jyväskylä 2030

The changing climate touches everyone of us and actors need to act on slowing it down, also in Jyväskylä. The City of Jyväskylä is set on achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. A carbon neutral city does not emit more carbon to the atmosphere than it can absorb from the atmosphere in its carbon sinks, for instance forests.

Power cut

There is an exceptional winter in front of us, and we might probably suffer from the lack of electricity including even power cuts for which we will have to try to be prepared.

Fortunately, there are some good advice on how to prepare actively for possible power cuts. A power cut lasting a couple of hours does not cause big problems, if you are prepared in advance.

Hiking

Jyväskylä has a number of marked nature trails with information boards in a variety of terrains and suitable for hikers of different skill levels. In addition, the city has bird towers situated by a number of different bodies of water. From them one can spot even some rarer birds, particularly during the springtime.

The large areas of unbroken forest and varying terrain offer excellent possibilities for hiking and nature experiences. There are also some fine nature spots right by the centre which are worth a visit.

Noise control

Environmental protection authorities are responsible for the prevention of noise disturbance within the city area, for instance in conjunction with environmental permits and by participating in the planning of land use.

Air pollution control

Traffic in the city and along trunk roads as well as emissions from industrial plants worsen the quality of the air. The city’s environmental protection authorities make decisions and give verdicts to combat these disadvantages.

The sanding of the roads is the most significant individual culprit for worsened air quality in the city. Due to the dust emitted from it, the air quality may at times even be very poor during the spring.

Feeding of birds

The feeding must not cause health or hygiene harm to neighbours or the surrounding environment. Do not let rats, mice or pest birds enter the feeding place. Stop feeding if the surrounding area gets dirty or if pest birds or rats multiply in the area.

In public areas such as parks or recreation areas, the feeding of birds requires the permission of the landowner. The housing company may prohibit or restrict the feeding of birds in its general rules in yards, on balconies, or on window sills.

Extensive rat sightings

More extensive rat sightings can be reported to the environmental health authorities of the Jyväskylä region either

In the feedback system one may, among other things, indicate on a map where the rats have been observed.
