Connecting Provincial Workshops and International Printmakers
A group of 19 international artists coming from Sweden, Norway and Portugal are connecting with Finland through a contemporary printmaking exhibition project to be presented at Galleria Ratamo, with opening on the 2nd of May at 17h. Besides this exhibition, a polyester workshop will be also given by one of the participating artists, Naoji Ishiyama. This 3rd exhibition of the project Connecting Provincial Workshops and International Printmakers happens with the support from Jukka Partanen, the Curator of the Art Museum of Jyväskylä and Swedish – Finnish Foundation. This is a project that gathers artworks from artists working in the provinces, where associated printmaking workshops assume a significant cultural role for the local artists’ community.
Through an interchange of artists from participating countries, one of the aims of the cpw_iprintmakers project is to share knowledge about printmaking techniques which are transversal to geography, language, and consequently working as the connecting force of the project. Another aim is to strengthen artist’s networks and to stimulate creative production on this field beyond cosmopolitan centres, while at the same time giving the artists the opportunity of exhibiting and creating artwork under different cultural environments.
Until now, about 33 people have participated in previous Printmaking workshops in Portugal and in Sweden. This project was initiated by Doctor of Philosophy in Art History Rita Vargas, an artist who worked as a freelance at Ratamo Printmaking studio for about 9 years and recently moved to Helsinki to start her own printmaking studio – Vargas Print Studio.
