Suburban programme 2020-2022 is a programme stipulated by the Government and coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment, involving the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, the Ministry of the Interior as well as the Ministry of Justice 

The aim of the programme is the comprehensive and long-term positive development of suburb residential areas which will bring wellbeing to the residents and vitality to the areas. 

The three-year programme calls for inter-administrative measures which will promote: 

  • the prevention of segregation of residential areas 
  • an increase in the wellbeing and inclusion of the residents 
  • the vitality of the residential areas 
  • the ensurance of good level of services and housing 

Wellbeing and Vitality for Huhtasuo 

In Jyväskylä Huhtasuo residental area was chosen as a target area of the suburban programme.  The priorities of the ”Wellbeing and vitality for Huhtasuo” -project are: 

Planning of the Huhtakeskusarea, to commence during the Suburban programme, and reclassification of the former Pupuhuhta school area currently underway, take a central role in the projects and the development of the built-up environment in the area. The planning projects will diversify the housing stock of the area and create in the area new opportunities for housing. 

The attractiveness and safety of the built environment will be improved e.g.through lighting renovations, as well as a renewal of the park areas and other measures that improve the attractiveness of the area, thus highlighting the strengths of the area such as nature, greenery and various sports and outdoor activities. 

The social wellbeing and equality of the inhabitants will be promoted e.g.by exploring the opportunities of integrating and mixing different services, gaining access to the area, as well as enabling various hybrid services by strengthening cooperation between the city and the non-governmental organisations. 

The ‘Wellbeing and Vitality for Huhtasuo’ project aspires to produce, for the inhabitants of all ages in the area, positive experiences of their own opportunities for influence and the implementation of inclusiveness through a variety means. 

The aim of the project is to support equal opportunities for residents to live and thrive precisely where they live.
