Climate change is shaping our environment at great speed and at the same time is defining the future of world in which we live. Our youth could not alter the course of climate change when it was still possible, and this brings up important questions: Do we have the right to feel scared, angry or hope?  Who is responsible for the future? What can we demand from others as well as from ourselves?  What kind of future will our generation have?

Possibilities is a project conceived by Elli Heiska, Ilona Siistonen and Selma Kiuru which brings five local young artists ages 15 to 19 years together around questions of climate change. Helmi Pesonen, Emilia Turunen, Kaapo Riikonen, Aliina Ruuttunen and Arttu Martikainen represent their generation in both the climate change conversation and the art field. The result of this collaboration combines different techniques and art forms, and approaches the theme from different perspectives. Sound, light, colour and image are intertwined into a  unique world which gives the visitor the possibility to reflect on their own feelings about climate change from the artists perspectives.

One of the main objectives for the Possibilities project was to encourage youth to speak out about climate change and to promote cultural activities and experiences. This project has received support from the Jyväskylä Youth Council for bringing youth together and from the Finnish Cultural Fund climate change project.

Although climate change particularly affects youth, we would also like to hear about other generations’ thoughts and feelings on this subject. Tell us your opinion!

On Facebook we are collecting perspectives on climate change from anyone who would like to share. You can tell us what you think in writing, by voice message, video or in an image.  The submission form does not include personal information so submissions can be made anonymously – albeit respectfully. The collected material will be used for the creation of the Possibilities installation piece.

The Possibilities exhibition is also a part of the Jyväskylä Summer festival week which will be held from July 1st to 7th, 2020. Visitors will be able to participate in a special programme during that week.
