Body

Everyone has access to the library, regardless of their place of residence. The collections, services and public spaces are open to all who respect the rules of use. You will always need a library card to borrow books.

You can obtain a library card at any Keski Library branch. You can use the same card at all branches of the Jyväskylä City Library and other libraries on the Keski Library Network. The first library card is free of charge. Replacement cards cost 2 EUR.

The library card is personal and is issued to anyone who, when registering as a borrower, provides proof of identity and an address in Finland. For children under 15 years of age, the application is made by the guardian, but the card can be collected by the child. The guardian's details will be added to the customer data of children under 15 years of age at the application stage. You can add your dependants' details to your data in the online library. To find out how to do this, please see the instructions for the family account in the Keski Online Library.

As a library cardholder, you are responsible for all material borrowed with your card. The library cardholder, as well as the guardian of the cardholder under 15 years of age, is obliged to compensate for any damaged, lost or unreturned library material.

Apply for a library card

You can apply for a library card using the online form. E-identify yourself and fill in the electronic form. For children under 15 years of age, the application is made by a parent or guardian. Once you have submitted your online application, you can pick up your library card the next day at any Keski Library branch. Please note that no separate notification will be sent for a completed library card.

If you are unable to authenticate online, you can fill in and print the library card form. This will speed up your visit to the library. On the same form (second page), you can authorise a child under 15 to use the self-service libraries. Please, read the rules for using the self-service libraries (pdf) beforehand.

PIN code

The PIN code is a four-digit number that you will receive at any Keski Library during service hours. Please bring your library card and photo ID with you. You need a PIN code to:

  • log in to the online library
  • borrow from the library using a lending machine
  • borrow e-books and e-audiobooks
  • read e-magazines
  • use the self-service library
  • borrow a Hublet tablet (in Kuokkala and Keljonkangas libraries)

If you forget your PIN code, you can get a new one from the library's customer service by presenting your library card and proving your identity. If you are unable to visit the library, please contact the library's chat or telephone service.

IF YOU LOSE YOUR LIBRARY CARD

If you lose your library card, report it to the library immediately. You are responsible for the material borrowed with your lost card until you have reported the loss to the library and the card has been banned. If the card is found, the ban can be lifted at the library when you provide proof of identity. The library will also issue you with a new library card to replace the lost one (please bring your ID with you). When the new card is used, the old card will be cancelled. The new card will cost 2 EUR.
