Caj Bremer, Photographs from the 1950s and 60s
5.4.–9.6. Jyväskylä Art Museum, Gallery
Caj Bremer is a leading name in Finnish photographic art, with a narrator’s voice that clearly stands out among photographers. His oeuvre of over half a century is a unique contemporary chronicle that has become part of shared memory and has shaped the conceptions of Finns regarding themselves and their recent history. Caj Bremer’s photographs are based on a strong presence, human warmth and compassion. Underlying his life’s work is the sincere aim of telling about things through his own experience. Bremer’s work combines a sharp and perspective gaze with the ability to reduce the essential to a seemingly simple image often toned by gentle humour.
