Jyväskylän sydän - the heart of Jyväskylä

The Heart of Jyväskylä Development Project presents optional locations for cultural and art institutions

The project is looking into various scenarios regarding the type of activities and locations. It aims at developing the operations of the City Theatre, Symphony Orchestra, City Art Museum, Finnish Handicrafts Museum, City Library and Adult Education Centre in terms of activities, premises and facilities.

The vision is to create an active hub for arts and culture in heart of the the city. The best proposal for both activities and locations is due for release by January 2020.

The City Board reviewed the interim report on the project on 11 March 2019 and called for accelerated progress in further preparations. Among other things, the interim report presents optional locations for the centralised cultural institution. Read the interim report here.

City centre a natural home to art and culture

“City centres in Finland include deplorably few non-commercial venues with a low entry barrier that people can go to relax and enjoy. Cultural and art institutions could offer such places for emotional experiences and human encounters,” says Project Manager Janne Viitamies.

Ms Anne Sandelin, Director of Business Development and Employment Services, believes that the future appeal of Jyväskylä’s city centre will not be based exclusively on commerce and consumption. “Moreover, the buildings and premises require extensive renovations and we also need new facilities, such as the long-hoped-for music centre.”
