In Jyväskylä, 505 inspections were carried out, in Laukaa 67 and in Muurame 65. No inspections were carried out in Toivakka this year because there would have been so few inspections.
Composting inspections were carried out to ensure that the composter meets the requirements of waste management regulations. The composter must be airtight, air-conditioned and thermally insulated for year-round use. Its structures must not have openings of more than 0.7 centimetres in size to prevent pests from penetrating.
One third of the inspections were rejected
About a third, or 207, of the composting inspections were rejected. The most common reason for rejecting inspections was that the composter could not be found during the inspection.
However, there may be several reasons why the composter cannot be found. For example, the yards of some properties are very large, and it is not always possible to go through all areas during the inspection. Some customers, on the other hand, belong to a composting or bio group with a neighbour, but this has not been reported to Mustankorkea. In this case, the composter will naturally not be found in the yard of the property to be inspected.
However, a large number of cases were related to situations where there was no composter at all on the property. In connection with the inspections, customers received advice on how to start composting or how to organise biowaste management in some other way.
The majority of composters met the requirements
Although deficiencies were found during the inspections, most of the inspected composters met the requirements of the waste management regulations. The inspections also provided practical instructions and tips for composting and other waste management matters.
"Many properties compost appropriately, but no composting notification has been submitted. It is important to submit a composting notification so that the register information remains up to date and the inspections can be targeted correctly," says Saana Lempiäinen, Chief Waste Management Planner at the Jyväskylä Region Waste Board.
The shared use of a biowaste container or composter must be reported to Mustankorkea. An agreement between neighbours alone is not enough, as then the information about the group will not be forwarded to the waste management register.
At Mustankorkea's MyWaste Management (in Finnish), you can easily take care of waste management matters online
You can submit a composting notification in MyWaste Management (in Finnish). You can submit a composting notification in MyWaste Management. The notification must be submitted every time composting is started, stopped or when the composter in use changes.
In the service, you can also check your own waste management information, such as whether your property has been reported as a shared user of a biowaste container. Up-to-date information makes it easier to organise and monitor waste management.
