Emissions from district heating fell sharply
In Jyväskylä, emissions decreased especially in terms of energy consumption – by more than 20 per cent from the previous year.
Emissions from the consumption of district heat decreased by nearly a third. The city-owned energy company Alva reduced the emissions of its energy production, for example, by replacing peat and coal with biofuels and by replacing heavy fuel oil with light fuel oil.
In addition, emissions from electricity used for heating buildings and other consumption decreased. According to the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), the increase in the share of wind power in national electricity production in particular had an impact on the reduction in emissions.
The biggest source of emissions is transport
Emissions from road traffic, on the other hand, increased slightly in Jyväskylä. Transport accounted for 44 per cent of all emissions in the region in 2024.
According to SYKE's estimate, the increase in emissions is mainly explained by the temporary reduction in the national distribution obligation. The distribution obligation determines the share at which fuel distributors must replace transport fuels with renewable biofuels. The required share was temporarily reduced in 2022–2024 due to the energy crisis and high fuel prices.
The city's goal is to reduce emissions
The City of Jyväskylä's goal is to reduce emissions generated in the area by 80 per cent by 2030 compared to the 2007 level. By the end of 2024, emissions had decreased by 56 percent.
The emission calculation data is based on the SYKE database. The latest data describing emissions for 2024 were published in June 2026.
