Infrastructure work begins at Hippos Center
The work initiated by Alva will expand the Hippos Center construction site, affecting traffic in the AaltoAlvari area. The sand parking area at the end of Pitkäkatu will be closed on Thursday, January 15, when preparations for the Alva construction site begin. Parking will no longer be possible, as the area will be used for construction site facilities, material storage, and construction site traffic.
Alternative parking spaces can be found at Hippokselta
Users of AaltoAlvari's sports services are requested to use other parking facilities in the area. Alternative parking areas can be found on both sides of Kalle Rutanen's path in Hippos, as well as in the parking areas between Hipposhalli and Rautpohjankatu and between Hipposhalli and Köyhälammi. These parking areas are four-hour parking spaces with parking discs. In addition, paid parking spaces are available in the AaltoAlvari parking deck and parking garage.
The sand parking area will not return to use as such after the Hippos Center is built, as it will be replaced by access to a new parking garage and parking spaces for drop-off traffic. AaltoAlvari and other sports services, as well as events and competitions in the Hippos area, can also be accessed on foot, by bicycle, or by Linkki local transport.
The pedestrian and bicycle path section of Pitkäkatu from the swimming hall to Keskussairaalantie will be closed during week 4 due to construction work. A replacement route will be signposted via the university's Seminaarinmäki campus. The replacement route will remain in use until further notice.
Infrastructure construction is progressing in stages – follow the traffic signs in the area
Alva is building basic infrastructure for the Hippos Center, including water supply, electricity, and district heating networks. Site preparation work will begin during week 3. During week 4, earthworks and installation work related to the construction of water supply and stormwater drainage lines will begin in the area. Work related to district heating and electricity networks will begin in February. Alva's main infrastructure construction contract is expected to be completed in October.
The environmental impact of the construction and nature surveys have been included in the planning from the early stages of the project. Tree removal will be carried out on the construction site during week 4. The aim is to carry out the construction work with as little disruption as possible to users of the area and to ensure safe working conditions throughout the project.
People in the vicinity of the construction site are asked to follow the signs and be aware that there is construction traffic in the area.
The district heating construction site on Rautpohjankatu is nearing completion. The Rautpohja 1 public transport stop, which has been closed during the construction period, will reopen in week 4. The pedestrian and bicycle path will be partially opened in week 4 to allow access to the stop.
You can follow the progress of the project and its impact on traffic arrangements and parking in the area on the city's website and on Facebook.
The renovated Hippos will become the most significant center for sports, elite athletics, events, and education in the Nordic countries.
