The population of Jyväskylä exceeded the milestone of 150,000 residents on Wednesday, September 24, 2025. Mathematically, the 150,000th resident of Jyväskylä was a baby girl born at Nova Hospital at 1:45 a.m. The city will commemorate the newest resident of Jyväskylä and her family at a time convenient for them at their home.

Jyväskylä has experienced strong population growth in recent years. At the end of 2024, the population of Jyväskylä was 149,269. The population grew by 1,523 residents compared to 2023.

- The population of Jyväskylä has grown by about one percentage point per year in recent years. This is great, and we are striving to meet the needs of new residents by zoning and building new residential areas so that we can continue to attract new residents to Jyväskylä in the future, says Mayor Timo Koivisto.

Jyväskylä's population growth can be explained by its strong status as a student city and new students, but also by immigration, which has been strong in recent years.

- Jyväskylä's strategy is to be a growing international city of culture. Immigration and education are major and important themes for us in order to ensure that companies in our region have access to new talent and sufficient labor. And we are well on our way in this work, summarizes Mayor Koivisto.

This year, population growth appears to be slowing down. In September, the number of residents is traditionally at its highest due to, among other things, the arrival of new students in the city. However, internal migration within the country has been clearly negative this year, meaning that more residents have moved from Jyväskylä to other municipalities than have moved to Jyväskylä from elsewhere. The city has work to do to improve the employment situation, among other things.

The city and our decision-makers have made bold decisions that will improve job growth in the construction sector, for example. The construction of Hippos will have a huge impact on employment. The renovation of the theater, the redevelopment of the city center, the construction of Harju, etc. are also projects that will provide jobs for the residents of our city and, once completed, will improve the range of services available to our residents in their hometown, Timo Koivisto explains.
