Jyväskylä is once again preparing for a busy autumn as the academic year begins at local universities and educational institutions.

The start of the academic year brings with it student events and a festive atmosphere. At the University of Jyväskylä, the opening week will culminate in the usual celebrations:

  • Wed 27 August: JYY and University opening fair in the Agora lobby. The fair will feature JYY, Soihtu, internal university bodies, hobby organizations, representative groups, and other partners, including the City of Jyväskylä.
  • Tue 2 Sept: Welcome events for new students in the main hall of the university's main building
  • Wed 3 Sept: Official opening of the academic year and traditional academic celebrations. Both the opening ceremony and the evening event will be held in the main building's assembly hall. The university's opening ceremony is a mix of new and old: traditions include an academic procession, and Diandra will be providing the entertainment at the evening celebration.

The academic year will get off to a lively start at Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences (Jamk).

  • On Thursday, August 28: the Back to Campus festival will be held on the main campus (Rajakatu 35). The festival is aimed at Jamk students and staff. Robin will be the main performer on stage. The event offers a festive atmosphere, a chance to get together, learn about the city's services and other partners, and get excited about the new academic year.

Humak's opening ceremony can be viewed on Monday, September 8, from 2 to 3 p.m. on Humak's YouTube channel.

Jyväskylä still popular among students

The city has a strong appeal among students. One in four people you meet in Jyväskylä is a student. With tens of thousands of students in the city, student life is visible and audible in everyday life.

In a nationwide survey conducted by Taloustutkimus, Jyväskylä ranked fourth in overall rating and willingness to recommend. In the City of Jyväskylä's own survey (Tietoykkönen 2023), 90% of students already studying in the city are willing to recommend Jyväskylä as a student city.

The city of Jyväskylä warmly welcomes all students, both new and returning, to its campuses and to its vibrant student community. Let the 2025–2026 academic year begin!
