The public beaches maintained by the City of Jyväskylä opened on 9th June. The Sports and Recreation Services will provide lifeguard supervision at Tuomiojärvi and Köhniö beaches.

Lifeguards will be on duty at Tuomiojärvi and Köhniö beaches from 9th June to 8th August, every day from 12 noon to 8 p.m. During Midsummer week, lifeguards will be on duty from Monday to Thursday. Despite the supervision, parents are responsible for their children’s safety even on these beaches.

Jyväskylä has a total of 36 public beaches managed by the Sports Services. They are equipped with lifebuoys, waste bins, changing rooms, toilets, and noticeboards that display important information about each beach.

When arriving at the beach, it’s recommended to read the information board and follow the posted instructions. Users are also asked to read and follow the updated instructions for using the diving towers. These rules are available at the beaches and on the Jyväskylä Beaches website. The lake bottoms were inspected by local diving clubs in May.

Beach equipment is checked and maintained every year.

Before the season began, a new pier was installed at Lohikoski beach, and the pier at Kaakkolampi beach was improved. Rainwater drainage has been improved and the terrain adjusted at Köhniö, Leppälahti, Jyskä, and Kaakkolampi beaches.

More information is available on the City of Jyväskylä’s Beaches website (in Finnish).

A clean and pleasant beach benefits everyone!

Beaches are maintained regularly during the summer. Visitors are encouraged to contact the beach facility manager if they notice any safety hazards or damage, such as vandalism. The contact details for each beach's facility manager are posted on the beach noticeboards. Toilet cleaning is handled as usual by cleaning and vacuum truck companies. Please note there are no handwashing stations at the beaches, so bring your own hand sanitizer or hand-cleaning supplies.

Smoking is prohibited on EU-classified beaches from 1 May to 30 September. The City of Jyväskylä Sports Services also recommends avoiding smoking at all other city beaches. Being under the influence of alcohol or other substances is not allowed on the beaches.

The City reminds residents that dogs are not allowed on beaches. Everyone is expected to follow this rule to ensure a pleasant beach experience for all.

To help keep the beaches safe, residents are also asked to report vandalism such as littering, breaking equipment, or throwing objects from the pier into the water immediately.

The City also encourages everyone to help keep beaches tidy. A good rule of thumb: if you can carry something to the beach, you can carry it away as well. Each visitor is responsible for keeping the beach clean and pleasant.

The City of Jyväskylä's rules of order for sports facilities also apply to the beaches maintained by the city. The general rules of order for sports facilities can be found on the General Rules for Sports Facilities webpage (only in Finnish).

Beach water quality is regularly monitored

During the official swimming season (15th June–31st August), water quality is tested once a month and more frequently if needed. At larger EU-classified beaches, water quality is also tested before the season begins. Jyväskylä Region Environmental Health takes regular water samples from the beaches. Results can be found on the Environmental Health website Bathing water sample results (only in finnish).

Results are also posted on each beach’s noticeboard. The boards also include beach guidelines and updates, such as if there are any usage restrictions. When you visit the beach, it’s a good idea to check the noticeboard for the latest information.

Park correctly to avoid a fine

Parking space at city beaches is limited. If possible, it’s recommended to walk, bike, or take public transport (Linkki). If arriving by car, please note that parking on grass or unpaved areas is not allowed without the landowner’s permission. Park only in designated parking areas, if permitted, and follow all traffic signs. Parking on the beach, footpaths, or cycle paths is prohibited.

According to the City’s parking enforcement, parking problems are especially common at Köhniö beach. Visitors are encouraged to use the Killeri parking lot, located 700 metres away. Despite this option, many drivers have previously parked illegally on grassy or unauthorized areas.

Parking enforcement also reminds visitors that the disc parking spaces at Kaakkolampi beach are reserved for winter swimmers only, for safety reasons. These spaces are not available during the summer season, when the beach is more crowded and vehicle traffic near the beach would increase accident risks.

When entering any parking area, always check the traffic signs first. Even if there’s no posted parking ban, you must ensure your parking does not pose a safety risk or obstruct traffic. Always park as close to the street edge as possible. Note that some legal parking restrictions are not marked with signs for example, you may not park in front of driveways, or within five metres of pedestrian crossings or intersections.
