School Placement for Newcomers
Guardians of school-aged children moving to Jyväskylä during the summer can contact Growth and Learning Services to arrange school placement. In early August, the service will contact the headteacher of the child’s local school, who will make the final admission decision.

For summer care matters, contact the on-call daycare centre

The summer period for early childhood education runs from 2 June to 31 August 2025. During this time, care will be organised according to the needs families report and the parents’ work hours. Some day care centres in Jyväskylä will remain open as usual until Midsummer, while others will merge with larger centres starting from 2 June.

From 30 June to 3 August 2025, early childhood education will take place in six day care centres only. The centres that are open are Savulahti, Kukkumäki, Keljonkangas, Tapiola, Kangasvuori and Pohjanlampi. Shift care (care at different hours, like evenings or weekends) is only available at the Tapiola day care centre.

A summary of holiday periods and day care centres open during the summer is available on the early childhood education (Annual calendar and holidays - Varhaiskasvatuksen toimintavuosi ja loma-ajat, only in Finnish).

Day care centres will resume normal opening hours from 4 August 2025

All day care centres will resume normal opening hours from Monday, 4 August 2025. The pre-primary school year will start on 7 August, and club activities will begin in early September.

Guardians of children starting early childhood education in August or September will receive a decision about their child’s placement by Midsummer. Applications submitted after Midsummer will be processed according to the regular schedule. If there is a change to the planned start date, families should arrange the new start date directly with the day care centre after receiving the day care place decision.

Decisions on club activity placements will be made during August.
