Jyväskylä Sinfonia Celebrates Its Anniversary Season with Major Joint Concerts and Top Soloists

Before the official start of the season, Jyväskylä Sinfonia will give two regional concerts in Muurame and Saari-järvi in collaboration with students from the Sibelius Academy’s conducting class and their teacher, conductor Eva Ollikainen. The opening concert takes place on 11.9. under the baton of Chief Conductor Lorenzo Passerini and in cooperation with the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra. In Passerini’s second concert of the season, the orchestra’s concertmaster Elias Lassfolk will take the soloist role, performing Felix Mendelssohn’s iconic violin concerto.
Celebration of Finnish Composers and a New Album Release
Former Chief Conductor Ville Matvejeff will make his debut at the Encore Hall at the beginning of October, conducting a concert honoring the 80th anniversary of Finnish Composers. The program will include works by Aulis Sallinen, Joel Järventausta, Outi Tarkiainen, and Matvejeff’s own cello concerto, performed by cellist Tuomas Lehto. The concert will also mark the release of a new Jyväskylä Sinfonia album featuring music by Järventausta and Matvejeff.
Kaj Chydenius Songs, a Symphony of Horror, and Hymn Arrangements in October
A concert dedicated to the late composer Kaj Chydenius will present his songs arranged for symphony orchestra. The soloist for the evening is his son, Jussi Chydenius, accompanied by actress-singer Oona Airola.
The cult classic horror film Nosferatu (1922) will be screened with live orchestral accompaniment just in time for Halloween.
Saxophonist Jukka Perko will perform emotional hymn arrangements from his hit album Kaanaanmaa (released over 20 years ago) in a concert during the All Saints' Day week.
Olli Mustonen’s Flute Concerto and a Guest Appearance by Oulu Sinfonia Highlight November
The Storyteller concert, previously cancelled in the spring season, will take place in early November, featuring flutist Janne Thomsen performing Olli Mustonen’s flute concerto for the first time in Finland, with the composer himself conducting.
Jyväskylä Sinfonia will join forces with Oulu Sinfonia to perform the monumental and war-themed Symphony No. 7 Leningrad by Dmitri Shostakovich. The concert will be conducted by Rumon Gamba, Chief Conductor of Oulu Sinfonia.
Trumpeter Zoltán Kövér from Jyväskylä Sinfonia’s own ranks will take the soloist spotlight this autumn with a performance of Joseph Haydn’s trumpet concerto in the Dance of the Tones concert, conducted by Tomas Djupsjöbacka. The program will also include works by Carl Maria von Weber and Robert Schumann.
Actress Alma Pöysti Stars in Family Concert Peter and the Wolf
Sergei Prokofiev’s beloved musical tale Peter and the Wolf will be presented in a new, visually enhanced version in December. The visual concert experience is part of the KUDOS project (Center of Excellence for Cultural Digitalization). The narrator for this all-family concert is the internationally acclaimed actress Alma Pöysti.
The Season Ends with Festive Tunes Ahead of Opera Premiere
The holiday spirit will be brought to life with the Grooving Christmas concert, led by conductor Nick Davies and featuring Jyväskylä Sinfonia alongside the Jyväskylä Big Band. The soloist will be singer Johanna Försti, known also from television. Audiences can also participate by singing along during the Christmas Carols Sing-Along events held at Taulumäki Church.
On New Year’s Eve, Jyväskylä Opera will premiere its next production, Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti. The opera will be conducted by Lorenzo Passerini and followed by four additional performances in January at Encore.
Autumn Tickets Are Now on Sale
Tickets for the autumn season are now available, including Solo single tickets, Tutti season tickets, as well as Kvartetti and Trio series tickets. The Tutti ticket includes seven concerts and comes with several benefits on concert nights and from partner offers. Season tickets are available until 31.8.; Kvartetti series tickets until 10.10. The Trio series ticket can be purchased multiple times during the season.
The Kvartetti series includes four concerts from both entertainment and symphony selections, offering approximately one concert per month. The Trio series allows the selection of three symphony concerts from the autumn season. Series tickets offer a 10 % discount compared to single tickets. Students should note the Presto last-minute ticket, which offers access to symphony concerts at a very low price one hour before the show if tickets are still available.
Tickets are available from the ticket office called Jyväskylä-piste, located on the 2nd floor of the Forum shopping center, open Mon–Fri from 10–17. Tickets can also be purchased anytime online at jyvaskylasinfonia.lippu.fi. Additionally, tickets are available via Lippu.fi and its nationwide outlets. In Jyväskylä, ticket outlets are located at Prisma Seppälä and the info desk of K-Citymarket Keljo.
