The City of Jyväskylä turns 188 years old on Saturday 22rd of March 2025, with a varied programme of events and festivities! This year the celebrations will be spread over two weeks. Most of the programme will take place the week before the birthday. The celebrations will continue after the birthday, when on Wednesday 26 March, the fifth-graders' own party will take over at the Paviljonki.

The Harju Ridge evening song will be heard on the birthday week

In honour of the birthday week starting on Monday 17th of March, a piece composed for the city, Kellot, will be heard every evening at 6 PM by Jyväskylä's Harju. The piece "Kellot" will be performed until Sunday 23rd of March.

The Harju Ridge evening song, planned for the birthday week, was composed by Risto Keinänen, a long-time musician of the Jyväskylä Symphony Orchestra. The piece was played from Harju for the first time on birthday week 2021 and has become an established part of the birthday week program.

Take part in the Jyväskylä-visa

A new feature of the birthday week is the online Jyväskylä quiz. Those who answer the quiz can also take part in a lottery to win five product packages. The Jyväskylä quiz will be published on the city's website on Monday of the birthday week and can be played until Sunday 23rd of March.

Get to know the City Hall with guided tours

During the birthday week, there will be 6 guided tours of Jyväskylä City Hall, during which you can take a look at the City Hall spaces free of charge. The guided public tour gives you the opportunity to learn about the history and present of the Town Hall. The tour takes in the public areas of the town hall on different floors. The tour will also include information about the renovation of the Town Hall and a presentation of the works of art in the building. However, Pekka Salojärvi's art collection is not currently on display.

Free tickets for the tours can be picked up at the Forum's Jyväskylä info at Asemakatu 7. Tickets will be available until 18th of March on weekdays from 10 AM to 5 PM from the City Theatre and Jyväskylä Symphony's customer service. One person can pick up a maximum of 4 tickets at a time. Any remaining tickets can be requested from the guide before the start of the tour at the Poliisikamari door of the City Hall, where you can also join the tours. The duration of the tour is 45 minutes and each tour is limited to 20 people. No telephone bookings can be made for the tours.

The tours will take place:

  • Wednesday 19th of March at 1 PM, 2 PM and 3 PM
  • Friday 21st of March at 1 PM, 2 PM and 3 PM
