Independence Day, 6 December 2022, will be celebrated in Jyväskylä with a program organized by the City of Jyväskylä, Jyväskylä Garrison, and Jyväskylä Parish.

The Independence Day special service celebration will take place at Taulumäki church at 10:00 a.m. (address: Lohikoskentie 2). You can also follow the service live online.

The wreath-laying ceremony will be at the hero's grave in the old cemetery at 11:30 a.m. (Puistokatu). You can watch the ceremony on-site or live on the city's website. 

The public Independence Day celebration will be held at Jyväskylä Paviljonki at 13:00 (address: Lutakonaukio 12). Before the party, there is a free coffee service from 12-13.

Jan Tollet, the director of the well-being services county of Central Finland, will be the speaker at the Independence Day celebration. Arto Viitala, the pastor of the Jyväskylä Parish, will give the greeting speech. Representatives of the Jyväskylä Youth Council will read the Liberty Message, and The Air Force Band soloist Sami Pitkämö will present the music for the celebration. Sirkus Bravuuri will also perform at the event. You can watch the event.

After the Independence Day celebration, at 14:30, the film Pelkosenniemi 1939 - the forgotten battle, will be shown in the same space in the Paviljonki. The show is free for the public. The age limit for the show is 12 years old.

The traditional torchlight march of Independence Day will start at 18:00. The marches begin in front of the university's main building towards the Old Cemetery. A wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the hero's grave at 18:30. The University of Jyväskylä's Teacher Education Department and 1st-year students organized the ceremony.

Harju's stairs will be illuminated from 18:00 to 20:00. The lighting is organized by Jyväskylä Partiolaiset ry and Mäkipartio ry.

The city would like to kindly ask residents, if possible, to light two candles at home behind windows on Independence day from 18:00 to 20:00.
