Summer experience in Jyväskylä won’t leave anyone cold! Whether you are up to easy going evenings enjoying sun sets or fast paced summer day, there are plenty of activities for you.

City’s shared living room next to Jyväsjärvi

“We have the most experiential port of Finland in Lutakko. There are plenty of great restaurants, cafés and green areas. For summer time, there has been built a big terrace area which was opened on the Midsummer week. There are six restaurant operators and 1200 spots for customers”, cheers marketing planner Tiia Masalin from Visit Jyväskylä Region.

There are a lot of things to wonder and experience for every sense in Lutakko. Nearby Jyväsjärvi you can rent a sauna raft or SUP board for example. The fifth year student Kati confirms that Lutakko is the place to be.

“Evening swims from the stairs on the edge of Teletubbies* park and restaurant Morton are my top things in Jyväskylä summer.”

* Some locals call Lutakonpuisto Teletubbies park due to its unique form.

Jyväskylä is surrounded by lakes and nature

On top of Jyväsjärvi area the Tuomiojärvi beach is one of the go to places in summer time.

“Tuomiojärvi e.g. Tuokkari just must know. You don’t end up there by coincidence but it is one of the best places to spend a summer day in Jyväskylä”, says Tiia.

On Tuomiojärvi, there are many beach volley courts, nine hole frisbee golf range, beach, summer café and possibility to rent SUP boards and kayaks. Briefly, sport and summer is kind of a package deal in Jyväskylä which is the best feature of the city according to sixth year student Ilja.

“Sport in all its forms: beach volley, padel courts, frisbee and regular golf, street floorball, football and basketball. All of them within cycling distance. In other words, you can do lots of stuff in a day!”

Amazing views in the city and its region

Thus we are in the Capital of Sport, there are activities for low heart rate too.

“Taking a selfie at a beautiful spot is also a great summer activity”, says Tiia.

If you are up to awesome photos and views in the heart of Jyväskylä, Tower of Harju is the place to be. There is free access in the tower and you can see over the whole city. Another scenic spot is the Matti Nykänen ski jumping tower in Laajavuori. Ticket to the tower is 3 euros for students.

If you fancy a bike or bus, they can take you to the Kanavuori trail and its scenic viewpoint. The place is located in Vaajakoski about 10 km from the city and Linkki busses 1 and 38 take you there.

Stop ‘n enjoy

“Lehtisaari summer home is a kind of summer cabin in the middle of the city. Transportation to the island departs from the tip of Viitaniemi. There is a sauna, beach volley court and kayaks in Lehtisaari. All of this is free of charge!” reveals Tiia.

The journey to Lehtisaari by rowing boat on summer day is definitely memorable. Closeness with nature is the unique factor in Jyväskylä and it makes Jyväskylä the perfect summer city for both travellers and locals.

“Even though there is nature nearby other cities in Finland too, it is unique here in Jyväskylä that we are a relatively big city but still the nature is right next to the boulevard” says Tiia.

Take the fun out of summer in Jyväskylä and find the activities that suit you the best!
