In recent years, the focus of foreign language teaching has shifted towards practical speaking and communication skills. In Jyväskylä, students will have the opportunity to learn by hearing, and teachers will use a range of active teaching methods in the classroom.

In Year 1, pupils start to explore the new language through sounds. Children will be asked to listen to the foreign language as it is being spoken and then repeat the sounds they hear. Alongside this, they will also be given written material to familiarise themselves with.
