The task is huge since there are nearly 18,000 over-70-year-olds in Jyväskylä and only a good 2,000 of them are using the City’s services. It is estimated that the remaining about 15,000 over 70 residents will have been contacted by Easter.

The calls are made to ensure that the elderly are coping at home. The elderly will be asked whether they are getting help from their family or friends in their daily errands, such as shopping and going to a pharmacy. They will also be given guidance and counselling on home services and on the City’s shopping and food services during the quarantine.

By contacting the elderly, the City also wants to make sure that they will not be cheated. The elderly needing help are advised to use shops’ home delivery services or call the City’s Home Services Helpline for shopping assistance.

Please, remember that the City never asks the elderly for money or bank cards. It sends an invoice for its services. Please, never give money or your bank card to a stranger.

During the calls, the elderly will also be able to talk about loneliness. In addition, they will receive guidance on health care services.

As a general rule, however, please remember that the elderly can still go to the health centre to see a doctor, to have laboratory tests and for wound treatment. In case of cancellations, the health services will call the elderly.

If it turns out on the phone that an elderly person needs medical help, a more detailed service needs assessment will be conducted by the elderly people’s services.

The City calls from numbers starting with 014 266

The City always calls from numbers starting with 014 266. The elderly who cannot be contacted will be sent a text message or a request for a callback. Later on, even letters may be sent.
