The City of Jyväskylä is one of the first cities in Finland to provide accurate measurements of CO2 emitted by road paving. The paving project at Parviaisentie in Säynätsalo served as the first pilot project.

The greatest climatic burden in paving is caused by bitumen used as the binder in asphalt. The total amount of emissions also depends the transport distance of bitumen and the quality of the recycled asphalt. 

“Against this background, it is vital that we look at the biggest emission source, that is, the asphalt concrete and its production,” says Tuula Smolander, Department Manager for the City of Jyväskylä.
