In a recent meeting on 4.3., the City of Jyväskylä Board established a working committee to sort out options to realise a permanent memorial in tribute to Finnish ski jumper Matti Nykänen's lasting legacy.

Ski jumper Matti Nykänen, one of the most accomplished Finnish athletes of all time, died on 4 February 2019 aged 55. He was born in Jyväskylä and spent a large part of his life in the city. The funeral of the Olympic gold medallist and exceptionally gifted sportsman took place at Jyväskylä’s Old Cemetery chapel on 1 March 2019. Local residents lined the streets and gathered at Laajavuori, the tower where Matti Nykänen first began his ski jumping career, to pay their respects to the sporting legend.
