Pets in Jyväskylä
The purpose of the Animal Welfare Act is to protect animals from suffering, pain and distress. Compliance with animal welfare legislation in the area of operation is monitored by the Jyväskylä Region Environmental Health staff (the hygienist veterinarian, the control veterinarian and the municipal veterinarians) and the police.
The municipality's veterinary services are responsible for the basic health and medical care of all animals in the municipality, the tasks required by the Animal Welfare Act and the control of infectious animal diseases. Municipal veterinarians are also involved in food law controls on farmed animal holdings.
The municipalities in the region have agreements with service providers for the recovery and housing of found dogs, cats and other small animals.
Article 14 of the Public Order Act mentions dog discipline. Dogs must be kept on a leash in urban areas. It may not go unleashed on the exercise trail. Prohibited places are beaches, children's playgrounds, market places, ski slopes and sports grounds. Dog waste must be collected from the treated area.
