The municipal water protection authority

  • monitors permit matters in accordance with the Water Act
  • gives verdicts concerning permit matters in accordance with the Water Act to the Regional State Administrative Agency
  • conducts general surveillance in accordance with the Water Act together with the state’s licensing authority

The water quality in the city’s water bodies is primarily monitored through monitoring programs given to different entities. The water quality is monitored on the Äänekoski–Vaajakoski route and in the Northern Päijänne region according to the monitoring programs ratified by the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment in Central Finland.

The municipal environmental protection authority monitors the flow of nitrates from agriculture into the waters as well as the purification of waste water from dispersed settlements. Read more about the condition of the water bodies and ground water protection

A water management plan is drafted for the water bodies, which enables a good water condition to be achieved in both surface and ground water bodies.

You can find more information about the condition of the bodies of water and commitments for improving water conditions from the Waters-webpage run by the Ministry of the Environment.
