Body

The city’s nature conservation authorities ensure through their actions the preservation of nature native to and characteristic of the area as well as its diversity.

Environmental Protection, among other things

  • drafts motions for establishing protected nature areas
  • advances the preservation of nature in city planning as well as in other land use and in cooperation with authorities
  • influences the choices the city makes regarding forest management
  • conducts assessments which advance the knowledge of nature and the preservation of natural conditions

Jyväskylä has a number of areas permanently devoted to various forms of nature conservation:

  • Natura 2000 areas
  • Protected nature areas established by the Nature Conservation Act
  • forms of nature protected by the Nature Conservation Act
  • restriction of areas where species needing special protection are found
  • areas protected by the Metsähallitus
  • municipal, general and grid plan protected areas
  • areas deemed habitats of especial importance by the Forest Act and protection measures established by the city’s own forest planning

There are altogether 18 locations in Jyväskylä which belong to the Finnish Natura 2000 network. Of these, four partially belong to neighbouring municipalities. Within the city, around 1 946 hectares belong to designated Natura areas.
