The OPEN Urban Environment
Jyväskylä’s architectural-, green- and participation policy, the OPEN Urban Environment, provides local aims regarding building activities and the environment and guides the planning practices applying to these. The policy principles include sustainable and interesting building activities, healthy residents and cosy environment.
New procedures are being developed and utilised in the urban planning in accordance with the OPEN Urban Environment Policy. As an example of enhancing communication and participation is a panel of residents with 15 city dwellers giving some new ideas regarding the opportunities for resident participation and taking a position from the resident’s point of view on various urban planning development measures.

The City of Jyväskylä organises an annual cooperation forum in the field of building on current affairs. The forum is aimed at the representatives of building firms and real estate developers along with planning offices of architectural and environmental building activities. During this forum, The OPEN Urban Environment recognition shall be awarded to an achievement, a party, a project or a person enhancing the attractive and sustainable building activities or cosy environment.
