The aim in the activities is normally to maintain and improve physical capacity and to create possibilities to relax and get refreshed. The most common forms of exercise in the groups are gymnastics, gym training, aquatic activities, dance and ballgames.

Swim schools for children

The sports services organise swimming lessons for chidlren all year round.

Choose a group for your child that describes their level the best, so that they enjoy swimming school while learning new things. A group that is too easy or too demanding will not support your child's learning and a good relationship with the water. If your child has challenges in working in a group, an adult-child group is recommended. Swimming schools have three level groups and an adult-child group.

The language of instruction in swimming schools is Finnish. The interpreter can participate in the group if necessary.

In matters related to the selection of a group, you can contact the sports instructor in charge of swimming lessons, eero.simonen[a]jyvaskyla.fi, p. 050 522 6829.

Swim school level groups:

  •  Varhaistaitoryhmä (Group where the child is able to start from the very basics)
  • Alkeisryhmä (Group where the goal is to learn to swim 10 meters either swimming on your stomach or doing the backstroke)
  • Alkeisjatkoryhmä (Group where you learn to swim 20 meters on your stomach and on your back)
  • Aikuinen-Lapsiryhmä (Group where child might be more comfortable coming to swim with an adult supporting their development)
More detailed descriptions and contents of the level groups can be found at the end of this page.

Registeration, payments and cancellations

More information about swimming school dates and registration on the Lasten uimaopetus website.

Courses are billed once they start. Participation must be cancelled no later than 7 days before they start.

Arrival to the swimming school

The participation message from the sports services will be presented to the cashier and they will give a wristband for the swimmer and his/her escort for the access gates and the locker. The wristband does not entitle the accompanying person to swim, but if they wish to swim they must pay the entrance fee at the cash desk! When taking your child to the pool, shoes and outer coats must be left in the lockers, if you need shoe covers, you can ask for them at the cash desk.

Swimming schools start and end at the pool. Responsibility for the changing room and washroom is transferred to the persons with the child. The swim instructor will check the participants at the pool and take the responsibility of them at that time.

Role of the parent at the swimming school

In swimming schools, parents are responsible for the safe movement of their children until they reach the pool, where the swimming lessons start. If the child cannot safely get to the pool by himself/herself, the accompanier must be of the same gender as the swimmer. For information on the use of the sauna on demand for escorting, please contact the swimming pool cashier.

Swimming schools for adults

The sports services organise swimming lessons for adults and youth from autumn to spring. For adults and youth, there are beginner and advanced beginner courses.

Beginner courses for adults and youth

Beginner course is for adults without swimming skills. This may be due to a fear of water or a "near miss"-situation in the past. The course proceeds at each participant's own pace, starting with getting used to the water. Lessons progress from the basics of swimming to wetting, floating, gliding and basic swimming skills. The aim is to achieve braveness to enter the water and to learn basic swimming. Lessons are given in a low height teaching pool. The course lasts 1 hour x 8 times.

Advanced beginner courses for adults and youth

The aim of the advanced beginner courses is to strengthen your basic swimming skills, learn the correct swimming technique and be able to swim in deep water. You can come to the advanced beginner course even if you have not attended the beginner course, if you have the basic swimming skills (wetting, floating, sliding, basic swimming). Lessons are usually held in a low height pool. The course lasts 1 hour x 8 times.
