24.4.2024The city of Jyväskylä wants to hear from residents about their walking experiences and habits in Jyväskylä. What makes you walk and what prevents you from walking? Where do you feel comfortable as a pedestrian and in which places is it difficult to walk? As a resident, you have the best knowledge of how your neighborhood works in terms of walking and how the conditions should be improved. The survey is carried out to support the planning of Jyväskylä's new walking and cycling promotion program. All residents of Jyväskylä can answer the survey, either by themselves or with assistance.Image

22.4.2024Kvik kvik, tsirp tsirp and ti-ti-tyy – now you no longer have to guess which bird species it is, as the artificial intelligence of the mobile application recognizes bird species! By making a recording, you can also help science. During the spring, a hundred point counting sites for migratory birds have been set up in the City of Jyväskylä area, where anyone can record birdsong and make their recordings available to researchers. This is the Migratory Bird Spring application developed by the University of Jyväskylä, and this year it will be used to create a point count network together with the City of Helsinki and Metsähallitus National Parks.Image

26.6.2023The result of the Mattilanniemi beach swimming water samples taken on Tuesday, 20 June 2023, showed that the microbiological quality of the water now meets the requirements. The swimming ban issued to Mattilanniemi beach on Monday, 19 June 2023, is lifted. Now the beach is in normal use again.Image

17.4.2023The federal council of the Finnish Athletics Federation (SUL) has granted the 2026 Athletics Championship, the Kaleva Games (Kalevan Kisat), to Jyväskylä. The City of Jyväskylä and the Jyväskylä Field Athletes (JKU) jointly applied for competitions for 2026, which is the 100th anniversary of Harju Stadium. Harju Stadium will be renovated and expanded by the time of the Kaleva Games.Image

17.11.2022The Finnish round of the World Rally Championship, or Secto Rally Finland, returned this year to its full four-day glory after the difficult coronavirus period. Finland’s national team, Susijengi, faces Ukraine at LähiTapiola Areena on Thursday, August 18, as they gear up for EuroBasket 2022. This will also be the first national team game for Lauri Markkanen, the premier star of Finnish basketball, in his hometown.Image
Jyväskylä is a sporting paradise for all interested in physical well-being. The city encourages everyone from babies to the elderly to adopt an active lifestyle. There are a great number of disciplines to choose from whether your interest lies in serious competition or just gentle exercise.
The City of Jyväskylä has approximately 360 sports venues that range from multipurpose halls to nature trails. Top athletes can prepare for competition in about 70 different sports thanks to well-equipped training facilities and high-quality coaching. In addition to the numerous sports facilities, there are lakes and forests within walking distance to enjoy the great outdoors.
The city is responsible for providing suitable conditions for sports and recreation, and it also arranges certain physical activities. The City Sports Services organises for example swimming lessons and adapted physical activities for people with special needs and the elderly. Moreover, approximately 220 local sports clubs and other communities as well as the private wellness sector provide the city’s inhabitants and visitors with diverse opportunities for being physically active.
Jyväskylä enjoys an inspiring sporting culture. The atmosphere is constantly spiced with sporting occasions ranging from local events to the Neste Oil Rally Finland every August. The scientific research and education institutions like the university’s Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, contribute greatly to Jyväskylä’s reputation as a forerunner of sports and recreation in Finland.
