Timeless Beauty 7.2.–27.4.2025
Timeless Beauty showcases primarily classical Finnish art, complemented by selected contemporary works. The theme of the exhibition focuses on artworks depicting women and floral arrangements. In addition to museum collections, beloved works by Finnish artists have been borrowed from several private collections.
The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see works from Pekka Salojärvi’s collection representing the so-called Golden Age of Finnish Art, many of which until now have been displayed only at the Jyväskylä City Hall. Highlights include A Girl Fishing (1884) by Helene Schjerfbeck and The Seamstresses (1887) by Albert Edelfelt. This exhibition, centered on the late 19th and early 20th centuries, features portraits, scenes from women’s lives, and delicate floral still-lifes. Visitors can also discover contemporary art works that reference classic works.
The exhibition provides a fascinating art historical perspective on the role of women as models and muses, but also as independent artists. From the late 19th century onwards, Finnish women artists began to compete on equal footing with men for awards, travel grants, and study opportunities. Many traveled to Paris, establishing respected careers upon their return to Finland.
The exhibition includes works by Adolf von Becker, Gunnar Berndtson, Eva Bremer-Myntti, Elina Brotherus, Mikko Carlstedt, Alvar Cawén, Ina Colliander, Elin Danielson-Gambogi, Albert Edelfelt, Magnus Enckell, Albert Gebhard, Axel Haartman, Ester Helenius, Lyyli Kovero (Walkama), Anni Leppälä, Berndt Lindholm, Amélie Lundahl, Maria Martinau, Carl Nyman (Wargh), Mikko Oinonen, Emil Rautala, Jalmari Ruokokoski, Helene Schjerfbeck, Elga Sesemann, Anna Snellman, Venny Soldan-Brofeldt, Johannes Takanen, Nina Terno, Emilia Ukkonen, Urpo Wainio, Viggo Wallensköld, Victor Westerholm, Maria Wiik, and Werner Åström.
The exhibition is curated by Tiina Koivulahti, Senior Curator of Research at the Art Museum.
