Feb 16 – Apr 22, 2012, Holvi, Lower Gallery
Outi Markkanen, Piski
A selection of a Jyväskylä City art acquisitions of 21st century is presented in the exhibition which is a co-operation between the Art and Culture Companions and the Jyväskylä Art Museum. The discoveries were made and exhibits chosen and placed on display by the Companions who chose them from 250 items by talking over the favourites and taking into account many opinions of group members. More than 40 art works, prints, paintings, media art, photographs and sculptures are shown by 28 local or residence artists. Man and the changing environment formed as the exhibition’s central theme.
The collective process enlightened the work in a museum and gave the enthusiastic Companions an opportunity to get involved. Besides the Art and Culture Companions, also the museum personnel and trainees have participated in the unique process.
Our Art – Our Museum
In the Companion’s opinion art and culture are essential for well-being and the quality of life, while strengthening creativity as well. Public collection is everyone’s property, and it should be available and visible for the citizens continuously. Art and Culture Companions hope that the process will provide material when considering the renewal of the ways of action within museums.
During the preparations for the exhibition, the Companions have familiarised themselves with the museum’s collections and day-to-day work. As a part of program meetings will be arranged, where museum staff will also present their work during the exhibition. Also, while enjoying a cup of tea, the public can meet the artists. The Companions are available on Fridays from 2 to 4 pm and they can be asked for guidance to the exhibition or other events.
A 21st century living room is designed as a part of the exhibition. There it is possible to enjoy art and meet people every once in a while.
We would like to thank the Sisustus Ilo and the Studio Hakaniemi for cooperation in decoration. We would also like to thank everyone in the network for the interesting teamwork.
