Planning a Museum Visit

A museum visit supports learning best when it is planned in advance.

Museum exhibitions can be used in many ways to support studies in different subjects. A museum visit is suitable for pupils in primary and secondary education, as well as students in vocational schools and higher education institutions.

It is not necessary to explore the entire exhibition. You can focus on specific artworks or themes that relate to your studies.

A workshop can also be booked as part of the museum visit.

If needed, teachers can arrange a familiarisation visit to the museum and exhibitions before bringing their group.

Museum visits are free of charge for educational groups. Admission is free for student groups of all ages.

Guidelines for Planning a Museum Visit

• Allow enough time for the visit. Exploring an exhibition usually takes about one hour. A workshop visit typically lasts at least one hour.
• The teacher may guide the visit independently or request a guided tour from the museum. Tours can be tailored to the age and learning objectives of the group.
• Many exhibitions include ready-made learning activities to be completed before, during, or after the visit. Students should bring their own writing materials. Clipboards can be borrowed from the museum.
• If you would like a guided introduction to an exhibition, please book it with the museum educator at least two weeks before your visit. Guided introductions are free for school and student groups.
• The recommended group size is 10–20 students. Larger groups can be divided into smaller groups.
• The workshop space can accommodate approximately 20 students at a time.
• The museum guide is responsible for any pre-booked guided tour and workshop. The teacher is responsible for supervising the group and participating in the activities together with the students.

Photography and Sharing Images in the Museum

Photography is generally allowed in the museum, provided that no flash is used. In some exhibitions, photography may be prohibited. The museum will inform visitors of any restrictions in advance. You can also ask a gallery attendant whether photography is permitted.

When sharing photographs, please follow these guidelines:

• Selfies and group photos are allowed, even if artworks appear in the background.
• If an artwork is clearly visible in a photograph, it is good practice to mention the artist’s name when sharing the image.
• Photographs of an artwork alone may not be published online without permission.
• Artworks must not be used or shared in a disrespectful or offensive way.
