The seventh largest city in Finland, Jyväskylä received city rights in 1837. At the end of 2018, there were 141,305 people living in our city. That is 1,200 more than the year before. The increase is due to net internal migration. From 1 January 2009, the City of Jyväskylä, the Rural Municipality of Jyväskylä and the municipality of Korpilahti merged into one city, Jyväskylä.

City of Jyväskylä is situated at the northern end of the scenic lake Päijänne, 270 kilometres north from Helsinki.

Population with an immigrant background

The population with an immigrant background increases from year to year. In 2018, 592 people immigrated to Jyväskylä, and 400 emigrated from the country. Since the beginning of the decade, there have been no major changes in annual immigration.
