In Jyväskylä, multilingual children receive early childhood education and care and pre-primary education at the local daycare centre. The activities take into account support for the child's own heritage language and culture, as well as learning Finnish. ECEC and pre-primary education for multilingual children also support the child's integration. The cultures and convictions of children and families are taken into account in the activities wherever possible. In discussions about starting a child's early childhood education and care, we discuss with the guardians how, for example, the family's conviction can be taken into account in the child's meals.

The common language of a group of children is usually Finnish. The personnel of the children's group also support the child's Finnish language learning. Children need Finnish to interact and learn with their friends. Finnish as a second language education (S2 -teaching) is implemented in interaction situations included in everyday activities and in guided activities. In addition, the child can receive teaching of Finnish language in a small group.

Knowledge of child’s own heritage language is important. Learning a new language (Finnish) is always based on knowledge of the heritage language. Pre-primary education aged children can participate in heritage language learning if they speak a language other than Finnish as their native language. A heritage language learning group starts if there are at least four pupils in the same language group and there is a teacher for the language. Guardians transport the child to a heritage language lesson. Further information is available from the child's preschool group or Oman äidinkielen opetus - Heritage language learning  website (peda.net). The responsibility for teaching and maintaining the heritage language lies with the guardians.

Guardians get more information about Finnish early childhood education and care in an animated video produced by the Finnish National Agency for Education Early childhood education and care in Finland - English speak.

The Swedish-speaking groups of early childhood education and care in Jyväskylä are located at the Pohjanlampi daycare centre. Pohjanlampi daycare centre website (website is in Finnish)
