In Jyväskylä, it is possible to complete comprehensive school in English. Classes 1st-6th are located at Kortepohja School and 7th-9th graders at Viitaniemi School. The language of teaching is English, but in arts and crafts subjects and in some elective subjects, pupils can participate in Finnish-language teaching. The pupils' English skills are tested before entering the school. Teaching in English follows the curriculum and assessment of the City of Jyväskylä.
Teaching in English is mainly intended for pupils who have previously lived abroad and started school in English. The aim of English classes is to help students maintain language skills acquired abroad and to provide families with the opportunity to teach in English. General education pupils whose English language skills are so strong that studying the language as an A1 language does not provide the pupil with enough challenges can also apply for supplementary places in English-language teaching. Enrolment for the first class is normally done in connection with the general first class registration in January.
Pupils selected for teaching in English will be compensated for school travel in accordance with the kilometre limits laid down in the Jyväskylä School Transport Regulation. Students from other municipalities can also apply for teaching in English. A prerequisite for admission is the receipt of a financial commitment from the pupil's municipality of residence. In this case, the pupil's parents are also responsible for the costs of school travel.
