In Jyväskylä, it is possible to apply for a sports class for grades 7 to 9 of basic education. The basic education sports classes of the City of Jyväskylä operate in the schools of Kilpinen and Viitaniemi.

Applications for sports classes starting in August 2026 will be submitted in the Wilma system on 23.10.-9.11.2025. Non-residents and pupils of private schools can apply for a sports class with an application found on the websites of Kilpinen and Viitaniemi schools.

The selection of students for a sports class is made on the basis of an aptitude test that serves as a practical entrance test. When a pupil applies for a sports class and indicates in the application which of the schools, Kilpinen or Viitaniemi School, is the primary wish. A student can apply to both or only one school if they wish.

Applying for a sports class is also registration for the practical aptitude test. In the sports category application process, applicants from Jyväskylä will be given priority. Applicants from outside Finland will receive a separate invitation to the aptitude test if there are fewer applicants from Jyväskylä than there are starting places. Test descriptions can be found on the websites of Kilpinen and Viitaniemi schools.

Based on the physical education tests, approximately 24 pupils will be selected for both Kilpinen and Viitaniemi schools. If a student is not selected for a sports class, he or she will register for seventh grade in January according to normal registration practices. Students selected for a sports class will receive information about their school place by email on 13.1.2025.

Students selected for a sports class will be compensated for school travel in accordance with the kilometre limits laid down in the Jyväskylä School Transport Regulation. 

In a sports class, it is mandatory to exercise four to five hours a week. In 7th grade, there are two more hours of physical activity per week than in other classes, so the average weekly number of hours in a sports class in 7th grade is 32 hours. In eighth and ninth grades, additional physical education classes of 2 hours per week are excluded from other electives.

The aim of sports classes is to support the comprehensive development of young people involved in sports. The sports class extensively combines the development of exercise skills, health education for athletes, career guidance and general learning of life management skills.
