Pre-school education in Jyväskylä

In August 2025, children born in 2019 will start pre-school education.

In Jyväskylä, applications for pre-school education are submitted in January. The application is submitted through the online services for early childhood education and care. Early childhood education and care online services  (page is in Finnish).

Every child aged 6 and within the scope of extended compulsory education is entitled to at least 700 hours of free pre-school education. In addition, the right to receive free pre-school education applies to those 7-year-olds whose basic education begins one year later. 

According to the Basic Education Act, every child must participate in pre-school education, and the guardian is responsible for attending.

Pre-school education and schools cooperate closely during the pre-school education year


Regular visits familiarise a child to the school world, and the everyday life, practices and people of the future school are learned through common activities.

Pre-school education follows the operating hours of schools, but in such a way that the operating period of pre-school education always ends by 31 May. The daily time of pre-school education varies by day-care centre, being either from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm or from 9 am to 1 pm. In round-the-clock care, pre-school education is always organised according to the children's care hours.

All children in pre-school education have access to the services of a special education teacher, psychologist and school social worker, if necessary. The services of a speech therapist and an occupational and physiotherapist are also possible.

The transition of children receiving support from pre-school education to school is planned together with their guardians during the pre-school education year.
