Working for the City of Jyväskylä
The city organisation is the largest employer in the area. It employs nearly 7000 experts with over 400 different occupational titles.
The employment relationships to the city are in the form of posts and jobs. Most of the city’s employment relationships are jobs. The terms of the employees’ employment relationships are determined on the basis of the Employment Contracts Act, municipal collective wage agreements and employment contracts. Approximately one fourth of the city’s employment relationships are posts established by the city. A post always includes exercising public authority, which means that the official makes decisions concerning the city.

The application period for summer jobs aimed at school children and students is between February and March every year. The length of employment varies from two weeks to three months. Available jobs are announced on the city's website and on the website of the Employment and Economic Development Office (mol.fi).
An apprenticeship is a temporary employment relationship that consists mostly of workplace learning. Workplace learning is supplemented with theory lessons provided by the educational institution. The city uses apprenticeships mostly to train its own personnel. It is, however, possible for others, such as the unemployed, to apply for an apprenticeship. Civil service is based on the conscription act, and freedom of religion and conscience. It is possible to carry out civil service by working for the City of Jyväskylä. Information on the open position with the City of Jyväskylä can be asked from the Civilservicecentre of Finland.
The city’s service units employ more than 200 people yearly with the aid of employment appropriation. The city employs primarily long-term unemployed and young people, who receive wage subsidies from the employment office. The conditions for receiving subsidies are determined by the employment office. The decision on employment is made by the branch of administration or the service unit that has informed the employment office about available jobs.
