Have you moved to Finland and are looking for employment? Make sure you have all the necessary job application documents prepared and ready to send, but networking is one of the most important components to job searching in Finland.

Networking means getting to know people from different professional backgrounds. Once mutual trust has been established, you can begin asking about people’s own paths to their job, as well as suggestions for how and where you could develop your skills to be useful to the Finnish job market. You can show interest in how their employment path has developed over the years, but remember to also present your talents and specific questions about your job search.

Asking specifics can lead to interesting conversations. Here are some examples:
•    Do you mind me asking, how have you gotten to where you are today?
•    Who do you suggest I could talk to about ____ (your area of interest)?
•    What does your job entail?
•    What are the best parts and the biggest challenges of your job?
•    What certifications or level of education is required for your job?

Be active, advocate for your skills to show, be understood and heard in a wide variety of networks, whether through professional organizations, free-time activities, neighbors or volunteering!
