Säynätsalo’s location at the northern end of Lake Päijänne guarantees year-round recreational opportunities related to sport and other forms of physical activity as well as nature. Of the activities linked to nature fishing and boating are the most popular.

For fitness enthusiasts Säynätsalo is an appealing environment, since the nature encountered on the islands is extremely diverse. Nature trails take walkers high up amidst glorious scenery. Along many a small side road it is easy to get down to the shore and take a swim in the blue waters of magnificent Lake Päijänne.

In winter there are trails of different lengths around the islands for cross-country skiers. The trails are kept open for as long as weather conditions permit.

Places that deserve a visit, even if you are on foot, include the numerous architectural locations of international, national and regional importance.

In August Säynätsalopäivät – the area’s summer festival offers plenty of fun and entertainment for the whole family as well as different age groups.

Päijännepurjehdus - the Lake Päijänne sailing event - is a competition arranged annually by Jyväskylän Veneseura (Jyväskylä yacht club) and its Lahti counterpart, Lahden Purjehdusseura. The event is one of the biggest of its kind in Finland for large keelboats and one of the largest sailing events on inland waters held anywhere in Europe. Säynätsalo functions as the start or finish of the race in alternate years. For further information please contact the secretary of the yacht club: sihteeri[at]jvs.fi.
