Renovation and restoration of Jyväskylä City Hall to begin soon

Jyväskylä City Hall was built in 1899, right next to what used to be the market place. The building, an example of neo-Renaissance architecture, was designed by County Architect Karl Wilhelm Reinius. At the time, it was the town's largest construction project ever. Over the years, the structure has been renovated several times.

The extensive restoration work to be completed in fall 2012

The planning of the restoration was initiated because the city wanted to eliminate the health hazards that had caused problems for several years now. Furthermore, the building no longer met the current fire safety and emergency exit requirements, and its technical systems had become obsolete.

The City Hall is one of Jyväskylä's most valuable historical buildings, and the renovation and restoration work will restore it to a state befitting its value. According to the project plan, the building will provide facilities for the city administration officials, City Board, and City Council.

The extensive and challenging restoration work is scheduled to be completed in time to mark the 175th anniversary of Jyväskylä, in the fall of 2012. The building will be re-opened at the end of 2012.

The project plan will be handled by the Board of the Real Estate Corporation of the City of Jyväskylä in its meeting on 9 March 2010, and by the City Board on 15 March 2010.

Press conference on 3 March 2010 at 9 am

Journalists and reporters are invited to attend to a press conference about the project plan for the City Hall restoration work on Wednesday, 3 March, from 9:00 to 10:30 am. The event will be held in the Poliisimestari meeting room in the Tietotalo building (Kilpisenkatu 1).
