Jyväskylä celebrates its birthday in March

Jyväskylä will celebrate its birthday in March by organising a lively, city-wide event. The official birth-day of the city is on March 22, but the celebrations will take place during the week before. Jyväskylän päivät (Jyväskylä Days), held from 16 March to 21 March 2010, will provide residents of all ages with all variety of events – open-houses, guided city tours, lectures, light shows, theatre performances, exhibitions, concerts, and lots of fun for children.

Jyväskylä was originally founded by an estate owner, Major Carl Christian Rosenbröijer. The City of Jyväskylä was officially established on March 22, 1837. Since 1979, March 22 has been celebrated as the city's birthday.
